Work Log (7/24-25/05)

Back to Vicente Flat Trail Logging Project Page - Back to July 24-25 Worktrip

During the summer of 2005 the VWA Trail Crew took on the task of clearing the popular Vicente Flat Trail of accumulated deadfalls that have been an impediment to hikers and livestock. In March 2005 several crew members received their crosscut saw operator certificates at a class given at Fort Hunter Liggett as part of the USFS Region 5 crosscut saw training program. These certified sawyers, assisted by other crew members, used skills acquired in that class remove the downed trees from the entire length of the trail.

In the course of four work trips (June 11-12, June 25-26-27, July 9-10, and July 24-25) the crew was able to remove all of the downed trees that presented a serious impediment to hikers. The two that remain, although technically challenging to remove, are not a problem for hikers and can be bypassed by horses or mules. It is expected that another work trip will scheduled after fire season, when USFS personnel will be available to assist in tackling those trees.

Below are before and after pictures of some of the logs that were removed. The measuring stick shown in some of the pictures is 30" (76cm) long
