This was a combination of a cleanup hike and a cross country loop. I started off by doing an out and back from the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor's Center to the JMT east crossing of the Tuolumne River, essentially the portion of the trail on the south side of Tuolumne Meadows I hadn't done before. The hike up to Elizabeth Lake was also cleanup...a short segment I'd be unlikely to do otherwise.
From there, I went cross-country up to the siddle between Unicorn Peak and Peak 10922. Went over to Unicorn Peak, as far as my non-climbing skills would get me, then went back over Peak 10922 and along the ridge to the Cockscomb. I did not step over the knife-cuts in the ridge. Looped around the base of the Cockcomb, and scrambled up to near the summit. Back down to the ridge, and then a more or less contour across the south side of Echo Peaks, going over the low saddle of Matthes Crest. Dropped down into the cirque above Echo Lake, and contoured around to meet the JMT at Cathedral Pass. Thence back to the car along the well beaten path of the JMT.
Sunny and pleasant at Tuolumne Meadows, sunny and brisk at higher elevations. The overused trails were well ground, the cross country routes were, of course, more or less pristine.
About 15.5 miles, 3600 feet of ascent, 6:50 on the trail.
