Once a winter or so, I drive around the southern Sierra Nevada, this time I went with my friend Julij. Map(s) of perambulations below.
San Francisco to Bakersfield - the always exciting 80-580-5-58 combo. Not boring, precisely, not exciting either though. Heading up 178 from Bakerfield to Remington Hot Springs was nice, also as usual. Sad bit at Miracle, which was officially deconstructed due to human stupidity. Remington looks as good as ever, with beautiful rockwork nestled by the side of the Kern. Decent chinese at Lake Isabella, then we continued up 178, over the divide, and up 395 to Lone Pine to stay at a random motel with a view of Mt. Whitney.
From Lone Pine, we continued up 395, with stops at Keough (too cool to go in), Hilltop and The Tub at Long Valley (both excellent), had a fish and chip lunch at Bridgeport, but skipped Travertine as the road was snowy. Dipped into Nevada on 208-338-208 for a bit of different country before dropping back to 395, Kingsbury Grade and 50-80 to return to San Francisco.
